It was another dunk-filled weekend at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School, as they hosted their annual senior boys basketball tournament. Seven teams took part in the tourney, with games Friday and Saturday.

"We're gonna go for third obviously, anything less is unacceptable," said Woody Klassen hours before the Battlefords North Stars took on the Estevan Bruins Thursday evening.

Six teams pre-qualified for the 2011 Sasktel Tankard, which will take place at the Civic Centre in a weeks time. Ten other teams qualified through the northern and southern playoffs on the weekend filling out the provincial field.

The Battlefords Midget Stars hosted the Swift Current Legionnaires on the weekend and had a chance to leap frog them and the Saskatoon Blazers in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, but failed to do so.

The Battlefords North Stars created some space between themselves and the Flin Flon Bombers with back-to-back wins coming Thursday against Estevan and Saturday in Nipawin. The North Stars won 5-4 at the Civic Centre Thursday.

Budding young hockey players will have a tough time making it to the NHL if they don't pull up their socks and learn how to skate better, that according to Calgary's Institute for Hockey Research.

Saskatchewan - it is a hockey hotbed which has produced 477 NHLers, and whether that includes the likes of Jason Herter of Hafford, who played one game, or Gordie Howe, who played 1,767, there is no doubt Saskatchewanians know and love hockey.

Week 12 was a busy one in the North Saskatchewan River Hockey League with eight games on the schedule and teams battling for playoff positions. Jan. 12 in Meadow Lake, The Stampeders downed the Edam Three Stars 6-5 in overtime.
