RPS Chief Farooq Sheikh recently said the public's perception of crime is not always quite accurate.

REGINA - Recent stats from the Regina Police Service (RPS) show that the total number of crimes against person is down compared to last year.

In their Jan 2025 report, assaults, Level 1, are down from 108 in Jan. 2024 to 57 last month, which is a nearly 50 per cent decrease.

These types of assaults, referred to as common assault, involve slapping, pushing, punching and or face-to-face verbal threats,

Meanwhile, assaults, Level 2, have decreased from 76 to 61 in that same span, a nearly 20 per cent drop. In this category, it "involves carrying, using or threatening to use a weapon against someone or causing someone bodily harm."

Additionally, sexual assaults have seen a 23 per cent decrease year-over-year.

It’s worth noting that last month, RPS saw a 66 per cent increase in sexual assault cases in Dec. 2024 compared to Dec. 2023.

At the time, the RPS Deputy Chief Lorilee Davies believed it was because more people were reporting said cases to the police.

As for robbery, that has gone down by 38 per cent from Jan. 2024.

The only increases in violent crimes were assaults, Level 3, which went up from one reported in Jan. 2024 to two in Jan. 2025. These assaults involve "wounding, maiming, disfiguring or endangering the life of someone." Crimes against the person was also up from 19 cases to 21, a 10.5 per cent increase year-over-year.

In total, Jan. 2025 saw nearly 100 fewer crimes against the person, an approximate 30 per cent decrease.

Even with the drop in crime, there has been a public perception that the city has gotten more dangerous now.

RPS Chief Farooq Sheikh recently noted the importance of sharing "accurate data because sometimes people's perception of crime is not quite accurate. Sometimes it is. But when we look at the crimes that really make an impact, [like homocides], people need to know that they're coming down."

So far, Regina has only seen one which took place last week in front of Carmichael Outreach.

As for where Regina is seeing the most violent crimes, North Central reported 28 assault cases in Jan., while the Core Group area saw 17.

For sexual assaults, six cases were at unverified addresses, while three were in North Central.
