The Regina Food Bank has previously reported that around 20,000 came to their locations last year.

REGINA - Ward 6 Coun. Victoria Flores is introducing a new motion that will help local organizations better combat food insecurity.

At the upcoming city council meeting, the motion will recommend the city execute a lease agreement with the Heritage Community Association and Good Trouble Network YQR for the use of the former #1 fire hall located at 1654 11th Avenue.

Both of these organizations, along with The Matriarch’s Collective, Regina Street Team (RST) University of Regina, faculty of business, are part of a collective initiative, which is the Heritage FASTT Program.

"The] program currently provides over 800 meals per week through various partnerships, demonstrating its immediate impact on addressing food insecurity and community support in Regina," said the motion.

This program also helps combat food waste. As mentioned by The Matriarch’s Collective recently, Regina has plenty of food to give out but not enough people to do it.

With this motion passed, the city will grant the program a six-month lease for the site, paying $1 a month.

Administration would also be directed to update and regulate by-laws to ensure smooth operations.

The Heritage FASTT Program would also continue to work with other organizations to address food insecurity.

At the end of the proposed six-month lease, the city requests that it "detail its activities, outcomes, and recommendations for future sustainability."

The motion was pushed to a later date.
