The senior baseball season in the Northwest continues to wind down with playoff and tournament activity.
The biggest events were the 2021 Baseball Sask senior provincial championships, with a number of teams from the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League involved.
The Senior Tier 2 provincial championships were held Aug. 6 to 8 in North Battleford. Among those participating were the North Battleford Beavers, who fielded a team including players from the Beavers as well as the Battlefords Trappers from the NSRBL.
The Beavers made it as far as the semifinals where they lost to the Parkland Pirates 7-6. In the finals, it was the Wilkie Brewers who took the provincial Tier 2 title with a 13-7 win over Parkland Sunday.
Other area teams to gain provincial titles over the weekend were the Macklin Lakers who took the Tier 3 title by a 9-3 score over the Unity U21 Cardinals. The Meadow Lake Sox won the Tier 4 title with a 20-2 drubbing of Arcola.
Meanwhile, the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League season prepares to conclude this week as their playoff finals take place.
The Kindersley Stallions and the Standard Hill Lakers meet in the finals, with Standard Hill hosting game one on Wednesday; game two goes in Kindersley Thursday. The date and time for game three, if necessary, is still to be determined.
The league also announced that Jaydon Gartner of the Lloydminster Twins has been named the league’s MVP for 2021. Gartner was also named the league’s top pitcher.
The Twins’ pitcher had a 3-0 record with an ERA of .97, striking out 35 batters in 21.3 innings.
