SASKATOON – Update March 21, 2024.: The Saskatoon Crown prosecutor entered a stay of proceedings against Dwayne Bruce Onofriechuk in November 2023. A trial that was scheduled for Feb. 27, 2024, was vacated after the stay of proceedings was entered.
Original story - A preliminary hearing for a 50-year-old man charged with stealing $250,000 in inventory from Mid-City Auto has been scheduled for October. Preliminary hearings are held to determine if there is enough evidence for the accused to stand trial on the charges.
Dwayne Bruce Onofriechuk is charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000 for stealing used vehicles from the dealership between September 2016 and February 2018, while he was employed there.
Defence counsel Aleida Oberholzer appeared by phone in Saskatoon Provincial Court Tuesday to set the hearing date. Case management has been scheduled for Aug. 11. The media and public aren’t allowed to attend case management.
Court documents obtained by SASKTODAY.ca reveal that Onofriechuk is charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000 for stealing used vehicles while he was employed at the dealership.
Onofriechuk was arrested by the Saskatoon Police Service Fraud Unit in March 2022 after a lengthy investigation.
The charges against him haven't been tested in court.
