REGINA — After years in storage, the model of HMCS Regina has been refitted and relaunched in a display case in the lobby of City Hall.
Mayor Sandra Masters was joined by Lt.-Comm.Aaron Kaytor, commanding officer of HMCS Queen, to unveil the restored model of the HMCS Regina this week.
“The return of the model HMCS Regina to City Hall stands as a reminder of our city’s enduring connection to this namesake ship and the courageous individuals who have served aboard her, both past and present,” said Masters.
“We greatly appreciate the efforts of HMCS Queen in restoring the model and for their work in preserving this important piece of our history.”
"As we unveil this model of HMCS Regina, we honour the legacy of those who have served with dedication and bravery. This model stands as a testament to Saskatchewan's connection to international trade and maritime history while reminding us all of values those who went before us represent. We welcome all who are committed to defending Canada's values and continuing the legacy of those who served in ships or ashore to join us in our mission," said Kaytor.
The model ship was originally donated to the city in 2009. It was on display in Henry Baker Hall until 2014, when it was removed due to renovations at City Hall. The ship is a model of the HMCS Regina, a flower-class corvette ship, named in honour of the city of Regina. HMCS Regina participated in many important missions before sinking in 1944.
