My Nikkel's Worth: Summer is back, people!

Not to be outdone, we then had Canada Day celebrations the day after that, including the fireworks show, and over the weekend there were 4-H achievement days and the light horse show.

WEYBURN - What a difference a year can make!

If you might recall, a year ago we were still under some of the restrictions imposed during the COVID pandemic, but they were starting to lift and gradually ease off.

One of the many events impacted last year was the 4-H Interclub Regional Show, which basically had a very abbreviated version of what they normally hold.

They were able to do some of the team grooming and other events for the 4-H beef clubs, plus the fed calf sale, but they were so limited. No public was allowed (even though that would’ve made no difference whatsoever in the spread of that virus), and those poor kids had to wear masks while in the stifling heat in the show barn doing their 4-H things with their project animals.

The sale went ahead, but only for buyers who preregistered, with no others allowed to come and watch.

Then, some of the restrictions were lifted, and in a mad rush, the Weyburn Ag Society quickly put together the Fair in 10 days.

The event was a success, mostly because a whole lot of people flocked to see the event that had to be cancelled the year before, and everyone was tired of the restrictions.

Forward to the present, and you’ll see a great difference.

Consider this past week and the week to come: the city had a bike rodeo, put on by the Weyburn police and other volunteers, then the Weyburn Chamber had their annual summer parade, followed by one of the biggest outdoor events ever held in Weyburn’s history, the Young Fellows centennial concert in Jubilee Park.

Not to be outdone, we then had Canada Day celebrations the day after that, including the fireworks show, and over the weekend there were 4-H achievement days and the light horse show.

The aforementioned Interclub Regional show for the beef clubs began on Monday and continue through to today, July 6, with the fed calf sale – and guess what? The public can come out and see all of it!

And then, after all that, the four-day Weyburn Fair is back, and the Weyburn Ag Society didn’t have to rush like maniacs to organize it, they had more time to put everything together.

The Fair will culminate with the Souris River Rodeo, for the first time since 2019, and the Rumble in the Ring demo derby will wrap it all up on Sunday. And it’s all without restrictions! So get out there and enjoy this - summer is back, Weyburn!
