Yellow Grass Wheat Kings still undefeated, Midale posts first win

YELLOW GRASS – The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings remain in first place in the Big Six Hockey League, as the only team to be undefeated so far with six wins, including back-to-back wins over the Bienfait Coalers.

The Midale Mustangs have claimed their first win of the season, 5-4 over Oxbow in overtime on Saturday evening. The win gives Midale a 1-6-1 record and three points, above Wawota in last place.

In the Yellow Grass games versus Bienfait, their first win was in overtime on Friday night.

Braden Mellon was the first to score in the second period from Andrew Hulbert, and Rhett Frey scored from Kyle Mryglod and Mac Metheral.

Mryglod scored in the third period from Mellon and Tucker Neuberger. Frey then scored the overtime winner unassisted.

On Saturday, the Wheat Kings won 5-1, with Dylan Frey getting the first goal in the first period.

Rhett Frey scored in the second period from Metheral, and in the third, Neuberger scored from Luke Niemegeers and Mellon, and Mellon scored twice, from Neuberger, and from Neuberger and Mike Onstad.

In Midale’s game, the Mustangs’ star was Steven Lindenbach with a hattrick, including the overtime winner.

He was assisted by Devon Johnson, from Adam Frederick and Johnson, and in OT from Brayden Ganson. Johnson scored on an assist from David Fellner, and Khenan Colbow scored from Logan King.

Coming up on Thursday, Dec. 23, Midale will be in Oxbow with the game starting at 8 p.m., and they then play on Thursday, Dec. 30 in Bienfait at 7 p.m.

Yellow Grass is off now and won’t be back on the ice until Jan. 8 when they host Moosomin at 8 p.m.
