Weyburn Beavers lose to Sylvan Lake, Medicine Hat

The Weyburn Beavers dropped two games in Medicine Hat over the weekend, and lost both games to the Sylvan Lake Gulls on Monday and Tuesday nights.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Beavers dropped two games in Medicine Hat over the weekend, and lost both games to the Sylvan Lake Gulls on Monday and Tuesday nights.

On Tuesday evening, the Gulls won 10-4, with a seven-run inning for the second game in a row. The two teams traded runs in the early going, with the Beavers tying the score with a run in the second inning, and with two runs in the fifth inning, but the Gulls bats came alive and they scored seven runs in the eighth inning, with Weyburn adding one run in the ninth.

The losing pitcher was Brock Depute, on the mound for two and two-thirds innings, with Owen McConnell the opening pitcher for the first five innings. McConnell allowed two hits and three runs, and had three strike-outs, while Depute allowed five hits and four runs, and had one strike-out.

Cole McGregor pitched out of one inning, allowing two hits and three runs, and Jacob Clark pitched for the last inning, allowing one hit.

Runs for the Beavers were scored by Nolan King, Triston Madison, Tyren Dorrance and Cale Yuzdepski. Robert Gurney had a hit and an RBI; Ryan Muizelaar had two hits and two RBIs; and Brett Potter had one hit and one RBI.

On Monday night, the Beavers did well at first, scoring a run in the first inning and holding the lead until the Gulls tied the game in the fifth inning.

Things broke open for the Gulls in the seventh inning, however, as they scored seven runs. The Beavers scored two in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, and they lost 8-3.

Luke Zimmer was on the mound for the first five and a third innings, allowing four hits and one run, and getting three strike-outs. The loss was attributed to relief pitcher Joe Savelkoul, who pitched for one and a third innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, and getting one strike-out.

Joe Hart also pitched for one and a third innings, and Jacob Clark pitched for one inning, each allowing one hit and no runs. Hart had two strike-outs, and Clark had three strike-outs.

In scoring, King scored a run in the first inning as the bases were loaded and Ryan McCarthy walked. Yuzdepski and Deri Steiert-Couture scored in the ninth inning to make the score 8-3.

In Medicine Hat on Saturday and Sunday, Weyburn lost by scores of 8-3 and 9-1.

In their road games in Regina prior to the weekend, Weyburn won 9-6 on Thursday, and lost 9-3 on Friday.

The Beavers are to host Moose Jaw on Thursday evening, then they will visit Swift Current on Friday evening. Weyburn will host Swift Current for a doubleheader on Saturday evening for the last two regular season games, at 6 and 8 p.m.
