WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 75 calls for service during the period of Sept. 26 through Oct. 2, resulting in a total of 22 charges. Of the charges, 18 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, three under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Tobacco Tax Act (TTA).
An adult male faces several charges following a Sunday evening traffic stop. Thanks to an alert individual remembering “RID” (Report Impaired Drivers – Pull Over and Call 911), another dangerous driver was removed from the streets, but not without some resistance.
Officers located the suspect vehicle and found the driver to be not only very intoxicated, but also very aggressive toward them. The male resisted arrest, physically assaulted the officers attempting to make the arrest, and at one point attempted to obtain possession of an officer’s firearm. In order to gain control of the male, a CEW (Conducted Energy Weapon) was successfully deployed allowing the officers to handcuff and safely take the male into custody.
The man now faces charges of impaired driving, refusing to comply with a breath demand, operating a conveyance while prohibited, dangerous operation of a conveyance, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and attempting to disarm a police officer.
Late Monday evening, the Weyburn Police received a report regarding an adult female that had been recently assaulted by her domestic partner. Investigation into the matter revealed the victim had been assaulted more than once in the past week and had sustained injuries from the assaults. An adult male has been arrested and charged with multiple offences including assault causing bodily harm, suffocating/choking during the assault, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and two breaches of his probation order. The male was remanded in custody for an upcoming court appearance.
On Tuesday, officers responded to a reported assault in which an adult male struck another adult male in the head causing significant injury. The victim was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital where he was examined and then transferred to Regina for further medical care. The other man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. The men are known to each other.
On Wednesday, the Weyburn police received a request to assist the Regina Police Service in locating an adult male, believed to be in Weyburn, who was wanted in connection with a recent attempted homicide in Regina. Officers checked several locations and were able to successfully locate and take the suspect into custody. The male was remanded and transported to Regina.
The Weyburn police responded to a residential fire early Friday evening to assist the Weyburn Fire Department. Officers controlled traffic in and around the immediate area while firefighter personnel worked to extinguish the fire. Damage was extensive but thankfully no injuries resulted.
Officers also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellСÀ¶ÊÓƵ, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals or bylaw concerns.
