Weyburn Adopt-a-Family program open for families, sponsors

The Salvation Army in Weyburn has started their Adopt-a-Family program and are taking applications for families and for sponsors until Nov. 17.

WEYBURN – The Salvation Army in Weyburn has started their Adopt-a-Family program and are taking applications for families and for sponsors until Nov. 17.

Nicole Strickland, community ministries worker for the Salvation Army, will e-mail interested sponsors a package which explains the Christmas hamper guidelines, and food item guidelines.

It also includes a form which they can fill out including their names and contact person, as well as how many families they would like to adopt and the size of family they would prefer.

“It is first-come first-serve, and we cannot guarantee they will get their first choice of family size, however we do our best to accommodate,” said Strickland.

“We also have a small letter informing them of the process and letting them know the dates and times of hamper drop off. Any sponsors interested are also welcome to come by the office and grab a form, and ask any questions they may have,” she added, noting that phone calls and e-mails with questions are always welcome.

Families that would like to be part of the adoption process are encouraged to call the office for an appointment, and come in knowing their children’s clothing and shoe sizes as well as their Christmas wish list.

As of the end of day Friday, Strickland said they had 17 families signed up so far for the program.

In preparation for the Christmas season as well, the Salvation Army will hold their teddy bear toss with the Weyburn Red Wings at their home game on Friday, Nov. 17.

The kettle campaign will kick off on Nov. 30, and a highlight of every Christmas season, the CP Holiday Train, will be in Weyburn on Sunday, Dec. 17.
