Three local students to have art at Leg. art gallery

Three art students, Deborah Nikkel, Britney Alexander and Mercedes Alexander, from the Weyburn Comprehensive School had their art work chosen to be shown at the Cumberland Gallery in the Saskatchewan Legislature.

Three art students, Deborah Nikkel, Britney Alexander and Mercedes Alexander, from the Weyburn Comprehensive School had their art work chosen to be shown at the Cumberland Gallery in the Saskatchewan Legislature.There will be a special gallery reception for students, family, teachers and other guests to celebrate the artists accomplishments on Tuesday, May 11, with a presentation of certificates by the Minister of Education, Ken Krawetz.The girls work was selected from more than 100 submissions, as part of the 2010 Minister of Education Student Art Collection. A total of 50 images from other schools were chosen, and for the first time they chose three students from the Comp. Art teacher Donna Klein chose the images from the first semester students and entered them into the contest.Nikkels image is called Wonder and Awe, which is a pastel portrait; Britney did a watercolour called Autumn Colours, and Mercedes piece of art is called Midnight Metamorphosis, a combination of Prisma color markers and pencil crayons. Having their art chosen, the girls were excited in their own way and surprised, said Klein.At the Cumberland Gallery on May 11 from 10 to 11:15 a.m., there will be a gallery tour of the student exhibition, and starting at 10:30 there will be a tour ofthe Saskatchewan Legislature, which is optional.From 11:30 to 12:30 in the Mackenzie Art Gallery, there will be special guests, including minister Krawetz, Karen Wooller and the SSEA Board President. There will be a lunch to follow and a certificate presentation by the minister.After this presentation, at the Mackenzie Art Gallery there will be interactive presentations through the afternoon. The students will be divided into three groups and rotate through three one-hour activities, including an interactive tour of the current exhibition in the gallery as well as two related art activities.During this time parents, teachers and other guests will enjoy a discussion about the current exhibition and then move through three 45-minute activities, including an introduction to ARTSask, guided tour of the gallery and a related art activity.
