The lynx was chosen as the new mascot for Legacy Park Elementary School out of some 300 submissions, and the school colours will be a six-colour rainbow, using the colours of their six learning centres.
Principal Arlene Dobson unveiled the new mascot and colours during the official opening ceremonies held on Wednesday in the school gym, and introduced the children who came up with the lynx as the mascot.
Lexi H., who is in Grade 4, and Bodhi C. from Grade 6, both had suggested the lynx as the school mascot, and were introduced at the ceremonies, and were seated with the dignitaries on the stage.
“The reason they wanted to choose the lynx is because the lynx is brave, like every student here in coming to a new school. The lynx representing our new school is what links us all together,” said Dobson, adding, “This was the missing link for our new school family.”
In regard to the school colours, the “overwhelming majority” of submissions from the students was to use the six colours representing each grade’s learning area within the new school.
The school is designed with the younger grades on the main floor, and Grades 4-6 on the upper level, and each cluster of classes has a commons area of their own in their distinctive colours.
The colours are purple, blue, orange, red, yellow and green.
“These six colours represent the six learning centres we have inside Legacy Park. In true school family style, the selection committee decided the students will be heard,” said Dobson.
“It’s a true representation of the school’s diversity, inclusiveness and spirit,” she added, before leading the Grade 6 choir in three cheers. The choir was present to sing the song, “Lead the Way” as the closing song before the ribbon-cutting took place on the stage.
This class had sung at the sod-turning 小蓝视频 for Legacy Park three years before, and are now the student leaders for the younger students, noted Dobson.
Earlier, the current Grade 3 class sang “Heart to Heart”, which was the same song performed at the sod-turning ceremonies.
In the ribbon-cutting 小蓝视频, Lexi and Bodhi held the end, standing next to Mayor Marcel Roy. The other dignitaries in the ribbon-cutting 小蓝视频 included Education Minister and 小蓝视频 Dustin Duncan, Cornerstone board chair Audrey Trombley, and education director Lynn Little.
