Holy Family SD is keeping tabs on the numbers of students and staff out for COVID, and so far only St. Olivier School is going to remote learning

WEYBURN – One school in the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division, St. Olivier in Radville, will be going to remote learning starting on Jan. 26, but all other schools will continue with in-person learning at this time.

“We monitor the statistics every day,” said education director Gwen Keith on Monday afternoon, noting that St. Olivier classes will go to remote learning from today until Feb. 7.

“The percentage of student absenteeism has been really high,” said Keith.

“What we do is take a look at the school’s variables, such as if the staff are affected and how many students are absent.”

In the other schools, they will remain with in-person learning as much as possible, and the odd class may go to remote learning depending on circumstances.

“I have to commend the teachers, as they make all kinds of adjustments as needed, to do as much on-site learning as we can,” said Keith, noting the staff strategize with the teachers to figure out the best ways to keep classes going.

“If the numbers get too high where it doesn’t make sense to be in person, then we’ll pivot to remote learning. We have different levels of instruction, and we let our numbers tell us which direction we should go,” said Keith.

“It’s tough, but we’re managing,” she added. “We’re keeping track of the numbers every day.”
