Dana Pretzer, a long-time former city police officer and school board trustee, has declared he will be running for the byelection to be set after Coun. Dick Michel resigned from Weyburn city council.

WEYBURN – A former public school board trustee and long-time police officer in Weyburn, Dana Pretzer, has declared his intention to run in the city byelection to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Coun. Dick Michel.

Michel made the official announcement on Monday that he was going to step down after serving seven terms on city council due to health reasons.

Pretzer said he realizes he has big shoes to fill after Michel decided to retire, but he believes he would be the right person to fill those shoes.

In stating he wants to run for the vacancy, he said he has served the citizens of Weyburn all his adult life and would be honored to be able to continue. Pretzer noted he served three and a half terms as a school board trustee, including as board chair.

His priorities include fiscal responsibility to the taxpayer and getting our fair share in transfer payments from the government.

In regard to infrastructure maintenance and repair, he said, “Let’s get the roads fixed sooner than later.”

He added that transparency is talked about a lot by council, but he feels more work needs to be done.

Another priority is to keep Weyburn safe, and able to utilize the hospital. “ER’s should never be closed,” said Pretzer, adding he also is concerned about attracting business to the city.
