REGINA - The University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) is facing legal action from both the U of R Women’s Centre and UR Pride.
SaskToday has obtained court documents detailing that The Women’s Centre filed a statement of claim in March.
The centre claims URSU has likely withheld over $200,000 worth of student fees for the 2024 semesters of spring, summer and fall while also withholding money during the 2025 winter semester.
They also alleged that the lack of funding has led to different operational decisions, limiting their ability to engage with members.
The centre is seeking URSU to remit the withheld levy while restraining the students' union from terminating its agreement with them while the case is ongoing.
They also requested to restrain URSU or its representatives from referencing their failure to comply with the agreement during any referendum campaigns.
Along with the centre, UR Pride has also confirmed they’ve filed a statement of claim against the students' union.
In a statement, UR Pride said, "students paid their fees with the understanding that a portion of those funds would go to the support centres—we are simply wanting URSU to comply with historic referenda, its constitution, motions from AGMs, and the Service and Support Agreement."
UR Pride also mentioned they continue to explore all options to receive the funding they’re owed and hope URSU will quickly comply with its financial and legal obligations.
URSU made headlines in early April after the university released a statement stating they would terminate its collection agreement with the union.
The U of R said red flags were raised with URSU’s financial statements back in 2024.
Despite trying to work with the students' union, the university said it had not undertaken the steps recommended.
The U of R said they "lost confidence in the URSU’s ability to serve and represent the university students."
SaskToday reached out to URSU for comment but didn't receive a response.
