UNITY — After earning the final playoff spot in the Centre Four Hockey league, SAAHL, playoffs, the eighth place West Central Wheat Kings squared off against the top-seed Saskatoon River Kings in the first round of playoffs.
Winning games one and two in overtime, the Wheat Kings swept the series with a game three win on the road moving them onto their next opponent, Warman.
The schedule is yet to be determined.
While the road to their goal of a spot in the league final will not be an easy one, the team saved their best for last.
Hunter Sperle continues to lead the team in points, earning six points in the first three playoff games, and scoring the overtime goal in game one. Landyn Nash was the overtime hero in game two. Hunter Sperle, fed by Leighton Partington, scored the sixth goal in game three that sealed the 6-4 victory.
Coach Pat Sperle says, "It was a very close series with two overtime wins, and our total team effort was amazing. We have great goaltending. We went from leading the league in penalty minutes to a very disciplined team. Warman is a very strong, fast-skating team with lots of skill. Last time we played them we had a few players out, so it will be a little different this time."
