Team effort, UCC addition is right on the button

Community partnerships make for great team work in completion and unveiling of Unity Curling Club addition

UNITY ‑ A Unity Curling club project began as an idea and evolved into a decision in the 2019-20 season and construction, which began in 2021, is now completed.

The project adds a larger ladies’ dressing room, a revitalized men’s dressing room and a specific meeting room, which are all attached to the main building.

Support from community co-operatives, Delta Co-op, and Unity Credit Union, were a big boost to this addition to the curling club, with each business contributing $10,000. Both businesses have been longtime supporters of the curling club and, through their support, the club has managed to ride the waves of highs and lows each season, especially those presented by the pandemic.

Megan Schweitzer, Manager of Marketing at Unity Credit Union says, “We were pleased to support the Unity Curling Club’s dressing room project. When presented with the request for donation, the Board of Directors approved and presented the club with a $10,000 donation.”

“One of Unity Credit Union’s key differentiators is ‘Community Involvement and Support’. We are actively involved in supporting the community by sponsoring events, making donations, holding contests and promotions, supplying volunteers, and actively participating in community functions.”

The Credit Union affirms they want their community, its businesses, organizations, and residents to grow, prosper, and flourish. The expansion of the Curling Rink with dressing rooms and extra space is a wonderful enhancement to the local curling facility and highlights the vibrant curling club in Unity and surrounding communities.

“We know this facility is used by many credit union members near and far, and we look forward to utilizing this new space," says Schweitzer

The addition allows the UCC membership spacious, warm dressing rooms with easy access to the ice surface. It will also allow the club more room for hosting curling events, a meeting room for officials and more private space for club executive to meet. The addition also allows more storage space.

UCC executive members say they employed skilled contractors from the community who were assisted by volunteers to complete the project.

Local contractors partnered on construction, electrical, heating, concrete and other services. Delta Co-op Home Centre was also a big help in the material needed for the project.

The project was funded through a federal grant, donations, the town of Unity and Unity Curling Club funding.

Unity Curling Club adds, “Our club would also like to acknowledge our partnership with the town of Unity, especially CAO Aileen Garrett, Councilman Brent Weber and Recreation Director Nicole Headrick … The town has also been a great asset in financial help, encouragement and support whenever we have a project or event happening at the curling club.”

Unity’s Director of Culture, Parks and Recreation, Nicole Headrick, adds” The Unity Curling Club approached Town of Unity with the ambition of a new change room addition. The Town was thrilled to partner with the Curling Club and coordinate the timeline with the planned exterior renovation of the Community Centre. The Curling Club is a huge asset to our community with many volunteers that dedicate much of their time and hard work for the success of the club and their committed members. We cannot thank the Curling Club enough for all they continue to provide to our residents and our community. “

While the addition will mainly benefit the UCC, there are times the facility can be used in the off-season by other clubs and organizations.

The completed project caps off a community centre renovation project that took place over a year and revitalized the exterior, upgraded the interior and now has the added bonus of the additional space as part of the Unity Curling Club.
