KERROBERT ‑ We are in some busy times here in the town of Kerrobert. Our major infrastructure work started this summer which consisted of replacing 22 blocks, which is 4,000 metres, of old cast-iron waterline along with the service connections and many sewer lines as well. We hired a company called Gee Bee Construction out of Kipling that specialize in this type of work. They started with the downtown and installed new sidewalks with curbing and new fire hydrants along with the first layer of pavement through two blocks of our downtown area. The remaining 20 blocks will be paved next year along with the second layer of pavement downtown. So far, the project is going well, and they should be wrapped up this first portion of the project by the end of October.
In recreation, the arena opened Oct. 1 and has been busy with hockey action already. A new Zamboni was purchased with the help of local businesses, service groups, residents, companies and surrounding RMs. The new Zamboni has arrived and is working great. Painting was done throughout the stands and water heaters replaced with a heat-on-demand system. With new lights installed over the ice surface, the old barn should be nice and bright to enjoy some hockey action.
The courthouse revitalization committee's main focus is fundraising to ensure repairs to the building are kept up so the courthouse, which has been turned into a cultural centre that houses the town office, library, art gallery and museum, will be enjoyed for generations to come. This group's focus right now is the front steps of the building. They were dilapidated and have been removed, so access to the building is currently at the back of the building. The cost to replace the steps has proven to be high, so town council along with the revitalization committee have decided to wait until spring to try to attract donations and do fundraising. The committee will be hosting a Christmas party in December at the Prairieland Community Centre and all proceeds will go towards the new stairs.
Kerrobert Wildlife Federation members are currently selling tickets for a gun-of-the-month raffle. They will also be having their wildlife supper Jan. 22 at the Prairieland Community Centre.
Many service groups have made difficult decisions to postpone their events until further notice. We look forward to any and all events that can take place to get out and enjoy what Kerrobert has to offer. Until then, there are high school sporting teams back competing including football, with the junior and senior teams are doing very well. Playoffs have begun and we will be cheering loudly to support them all. Go Rebels.
