This week, the staff at our school took the Red Cross first-aid and CPR training course taught by my friend Kim Lines. She鈥檚 a dandy instructor and really knows her stuff. We all left the better for learning these life-saving techniques.

Probably, if not certainly, the thing I鈥檝e struggled with more than anything during this past year, it鈥檚 been the removal of so many areas of service from my life.

Who remembers the Talkabouts, the Battlefords first rock and roll band? I don鈥檛 but I wish that I could, because we would be kindred spirits. When I was 17, I played in a band called Rick and the Raiders.

In 1870 Henry Drummond published a treatise entitled 鈥淭he Greatest thing in the World.鈥� The greatest thing in the world, he said, is love. He wasn鈥檛 claiming any special genius or superior intuition; he was simply quoting 1 Corinthians 13.

It is February, and each year the first thing that enters our thoughts is love. Along with various meanings, Oxford dictionary says regarding love 鈥渁 strong feeling of affection.鈥� Merriam Webster adds to that 鈥渙ut of kinship or personal ties.

I forgot that Ed, my old neighbour in Saskatchewan, has no stomach for bellyachers and whiners. When I phoned him yesterday, I launched into my story of a disastrous start to my day.
