No more excuses for impaired driving

It's an initiative with a catchy name, but there is nothing frivolous about the goals of Operation Red Nose.

It's an initiative with a catchy name, but there is nothing frivolous about the goals of Operation Red Nose.

Volunteers are gearing up for the second year of undertaking the extremely serious task of transporting holiday revelers and their vehicles safely home.

At this time of year media outlets, law enforcement agencies, ambulance services and a host of other sources broadcast a constant and insistent message of "don't drink and drive." Too many, however, still aren't getting the message and will indulge in a variety of excuses for getting behind the wheel while impaired.

Operation Red Nose effectively quashes all those excuses, because the service is free.

Donations are accepted, of course, but not required. Any money collected by the volunteer chauffeurs, who will all be cleared through a criminal record check before getting behind the wheel of anyone's vehicle, will support the programs of the North Battleford Lions Club and the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club. These are the host organizations for Operation Red Nose in the Battlefords.

So, gone are the excuses of not having cab fare, or not wanting to leave your vehicle in a parking lot overnight. Just dial up the volunteers at 445-2827 and they will come pick you up. The service is available from Nov. 26 to Dec. 31.

Operation Red Nose is looking for patrons (140 rides were given last year), but it is also seeking volunteers. Anyone interested is urged to call organizer Shawn Hewitt at 481-4741

North Battleford is the only Saskatchewan community involved in the national program, which started in Quebec in 1984. Last year 89 volunteers gave 145 rides. A tip of the toque to their ongoing efforts to keep our community members and roads safe.
