HUMBOLDT — If all goes right, work should start on a healing garden at the Humboldt District Hospital in the fall that will serve as a memorial for lives lost in the Humboldt Broncos crash.
The garden will be located on the south east east corner of the hospital property.
The project was originally expected to start in the late spring, but was affected by the pandemic. Michael Ulriksen, the director of community services, told council at its meeting July 27 the city is trying to iron out a few more details before the project can start.
“There’s potential that it might get pushed off to spring if they don't get some of these little things figured out but [they’re] still looking at going ahead in the next little while here.”
“I think that one of the critical components of going ahead in this fall is somehow we find a general contractor that's willing to take on a short term task as a volunteer,” said Councillor Roger Nordick.
Nordick said the contractor would be needed to help organize the project and is expected to be needed for a week. The project is also looking for a place to store some of the donated materials for the garden in the short term. A possibility might be a nearby lot owned by the city.
The Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee has contracted DCG Philanthropic Services to examine the fundraising potential for a legacy project to honour the 2017-18 Broncos. DCG provided a draft document with details on how to move forward. Rob Muench, Humboldt’s mayor, said a letter has gone out to a number of families to get their input on that document.
“The committee is very adamant that we have the families on board on all the decisions and so they're СƵ engaged from the company that we've hired,” he said.
