If Bon Jovi is 75% of what they were in Winnipeg over the weekend, then rock music fans in Regina will be in for a treat on July 28. I have seen Bon Jovi three or four times in my lifetime and they were the best this past Saturday in Winnipeg. Expect lots of the older stuff, not much in the way of ballads, and excellent sound. Kid Rock will open up, and if you are easily offended by swearing, you may want to show up after he's finished. The man is crass.
RCMP in Edmonton and Prince George are taking heat for botching the investigation into the disappearance of an elderly Alberta couple, who failed to show for a family camping trip in Abbotsford earlier this month. If the news reports we are reading are accurate, then the criticism is justified. One of the senior officers in charge of releasing information to the media had the audacity to say the case didn't set off alarm bells immediately because it is, apparently, a regular occurrence for vehicles to be found burning in the woods in Alberta. I guess the fact it was a motorhome belonging to people who are almost 80, and who are void of a criminal record doesn't really play a role. Hopefully justice is, eventually, served here.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are 3-and-0 after receiving a couple of fourth quarter gifts from the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday in the form of turnovers. Last week I said the Riders wouldn't lose a game in which they play to their fullest ability and now it appears they may not lose when they are at their worst either. I suspect they can't and won't be any worse than they were Saturday. Next up are the Calgary Stampeders, who are a deceptive 2-and-1. They
are not a very good football team, but will maybe pose Saskatchewan's biggest test to this point. For the Riders, they need to realize they dodged a bullet on Saturday and have to be better. As long as ego doesn't get the better of them, they'll be fine.
Buck Pierce is hurt again and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are about to discover why I was very happy to see Steven 'I fumble on 3rd and short all the time' Jyles leave Riderville.
Speaking of Winnipeg, a couple of observations from my trip: one of their streets is in need of such repair that it's going to be close for three (not a misprint) years. Three years. The name of the street, fittingly, is Saskatchewan.
Building a new football stadium in Winnipeg isn't a unanimous decision. People that live near the new site (University of Manitoba area) fear fans will urinate on their property after games. I have to say after driving by this new site, a fan will have to park really, really far away from the stadium in order to do this. I couldn't see a dwelling house at all with the naked eye (pardon the pun) near there. It's all university structures.
Manitoba just enacted their new 'no cellphone in vehicles' law. One thing we should be thankful for in Saskatchewan over Manitoba is a traffic fine. They love handing out tickets to make money and they wrote over 200 cell phone/texting tickets on the first day. By contrast, I think Regina police wrote 86 in the first six months of the same law. This tells me Regina authorities have 'real' crime to solve.
Thumbs up to the iPad. I had my first opportunity to monkey around with it on the weekend. It's a little smaller than I had envisioned, and that's a good thing. I'll get one eventually.
From the 'can't be good for you' food aisle: a burger made entirely from ground bacon. Sounds delicious though!
Baseball injury of the week: San Diego's Mat Latos pulled his side as he tried to hold his sneeze walking up the dugout steps. Baseball players are the absolute wimpiest of all professional athletes.
Nice person list this week: Geoff Currier, Allan Mitchell (again!), Alysia Dagg, and Marcey Miller.
