The YRHS junior girls basketball team hosted a one-day tournament Saturday in which they came in third place, said coach Jennifer Ingham.
"We finished third in the round robin. We played an exciting semi-final match against Preeceville," she explained.
It didn't start out the way they would have liked in the first set but it was very close in the end, she said.
Preeceville hung in for a 26-24 victory, however Ingham's Raiders also hung in, in both the second and third and deciding set. Both were just as close as the opener. YRHS won set two 25-23 and 17-15.
Ingham said that victory put her team into the final where they met LeRoy.
The first set went the same as it did in the Preeceville game, she told the paper.
"We lost the first set 22-25, but came back to win the second set 25-22."
The game came down to a third set, where the Lady Raiders came up just short in a 10-15 defeat.
"The girls played really hard and we are looking forward to our next tournament in mid-October in Canora.
Ingham noted that most of the teams over the weekend were "well matched" and the quality of play was good.
She said it gets frustrating at times, but can also be entertaining too.
The team had just gotten off a tournament in Regina two weekends ago that took them to Thom Collegiate.
It was an eight-team affair. YRHS finished in third out of the round robin, says Ingham.
They played for the bronze against Weyburn with a short team of eight players. Ingham said they were missing two girls, but they still "played awesome".
"It's a very athletic team," she pointed out. Just working on communication, she added.
