Duck Mountain Super League curlers arrived in Canora December 10 where they enjoyed keen ice, a well-lit playing surface, and plenty of competition.
Local curling fans pulling for Canora’s Bob Kolodziejski, sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, were surprised by the performance of his opponent Jordan ven der Buhs and his Young Guns of Kamsack. The self-sponsored Kamsack team was two up coming home and stole another point when Kolodziejski’s final stone wrecked on a guard. The win, his third this season, gives ven der Buhs a strong chance of a gaining an A-Side Playoff berth when Super League curling returns to Kamsack January 3.
Ken Newell, sponsored by Challoner Farm near Norquay, got by Richard Jordens of Madge Lake in a low-scoring contest. The score was 3 to 1 for Newell after six ends. Jordens, sponsored by Ritchie Industries, had a chance to tie the game in the seventh end, but flashed an open take out allowing Newell to steal another point. The victory leaves Newell tied for top place with 4 wins and no losses.
Fred Perepiolkin of Kamsack, sponsored by Nykolaishen Farms, was down 4 to 2 to the Rick Kinaschuk rink of Benito, but hit back with six points in the sixth end to take a commanding lead. The Kinaschuk team, skipped by Scott Schneider, shook hands after seven ends. Perepiolkin’s 4 and 1 record puts him tied for first place with Norquay’s Ken Newell.
Don Bowes of Madge Lake, sponsored by Cottenie and Gardner, notched his second win of the season by defeating Brad Knutson of Norquay in six ends. Knutson, sponsored by BHKN Farms, has one win and three losses.
It should be noted that Ken Newell and Brad Knutson of Norquay, who were unable to curl in Kamsack November 19, have both played four games while the other six teams have played five. These two teams will complete a make-up game set for December 20.
Duck Mountain Super League action shifted to Benito December 17 when Jordens was scheduled to play Kolodziejski, Bowes was to face the Young Guns, Kinaschuk was to meet Knutson, and Newell and Perepiolkin were to meet in a showdown for first place.
Norquay will host the final regular season Duck Mountain Super League draw on December 19.
