The Sacred Heart Senior Girls volleyball team has begun the 2011 SHSAA volleyball season.
This year's squad is a very young group with only four returning players and nine rookies joining the team.
This past weekend the Lady Saints competed at YRHS in a 10-team tournament. The Lady Saints had some very close games throughout defeating Balgonie one game and Kelvington in two straight.
Sacred Heart finished with a 3-5 record for a fourth place finish in their pool and an advancement into the playoff round.
The Saints faced first place Prince Albert Carlton in quarter final action. The Lady Saints came out strong and grabbed an early lead 14-7. Carlton fought back to tie the score at 16.
The next several points were a see saw battle until the Lady Saints regained the lead to win 25-22. In game two, Carlton was in control for most of the game and tied the match with a 19-25 win to force a third game. In game three, SHHS jumped to an early lead of 11-7 but Carlton battled back to tie and eventually win 12-15.
Coach Perry Enns said "I was very impressed with the play of the team; they exceeded my expectations for our first tournament of the year. Mariel Kotyk was a great leader for the Saints and she delivered some timely hits from the power position. Brianna Ostafie was easily the defensive player of the tournament making some key blocks in the front row and while in the back row she was truly amazing, nothing hit the floor when she was there.
I was also impressed with Gr. 10 hitter Kristen Jonassen and our two rookie setters Allison Kruger and Riana Skikewich. All three showed a lot of skill and confidence for their first senior tournament."
The Lady Saints will compete at the University of Regina this weekend.
