The Sacred Heart Saints made Melville a very comfortable place to play over the weekend. Normally, enemy territory is an unfriendly place to play, but SHHS performed very well this past weekend at the MCS.
The Sacred Heart Saints senior boys' volleyball team competed at the Melville Comprehensive School (MCS) tournament on Oct. 15 (Saturday). They advanced to the final, where they came up just short in a bout with Oxbow.
The tournament consisted of six teams: MCS, Indian Head, Oxbow, Kipling, Sacred Heart and Wolseley, said SHHS coach Curtis Moen.
Throughout the round-robin, the Saints went 7-3 only losing sets to Oxbow and splitting sets with Kipling. This placed the Saints in second in the round robin.
That put them in the final where they faced off against Oxbow. In the final, Sacred Heart came up short losing to Oxbow 20-25 and 14-25.
"This was a great tournament where we rarely have our full team present. The athletes got lots of court action throughout the day and I really noticed improvements as the day progressed," offered Moen.
From his point of view, the majority of the team came out to play that weekend.
"Outstanding performances went to Justin Shumay and Jared Buzinski for serving, Dylan Johnson for his middle hitting, Preston Liebrecht for his power hitting, Brett Tuttosi for his strong blocking at the net and Colin Shewchuk for his setting." Moen added that he hopes that the display of teamwork should come in handy when their home tournament rolls around on the weekend before Hallowe'en.
Overall, it was a great team effort and we look forward to competing in Hepburn on Oct. 21-22 and hosting our home tournament on Oct. 28-29."
