Saints junior girls advance to the finals

In a six-team tournament, the Sacred Heart junior girls volleyball team won one game after another all the way to the finals Saturday afternoon on home court.

Sacred Heart finished the round robin with a 6-4 record which was good enough for second place, says Brian Chisholm, coach of the team.

It was also good enough for a bye into the semi-final.

"We faced the St. Henry Saints," said Chisholm, of an all-Saints semi.

"We split with them in the round robin," recalls Chisholm.

The semi finals date wasn't quite so close, he observed.

"We were able to defeat them in two straight playoff sets to reach the final."

That win set up the Lady Saints with a date with the Melville Cobras in the final.

"They were the strongest team in the tournament with a perfect 10-0 record.

Chisholm pointed out that Melville had knocked off the Yorkton Regional High school, who had finished the round robin in fourth place, in two straight sets.

Not much went well for SHHS in the finals where they went up against a very powerful Weyburn club, says Chisholm

"In the final, SHHS played a decent game but were just no match for Weyburn, falling in two sets."

He said the YRHS club advanced to the bronze medal game where they went up against St. Henry (Melville), but lost 2-0 in sets. He said his team was just getting used to a new slate of players and everyone is still learning their positioning.

"We're figuring out positioning. Every year, we're starting from scratch," he said.

Each player on SHHS came to the school with experience playing at the elementary school level, notes Chisholm.

"It was our first game action this year. It's coming together."

Chisholm said both himself and coach Malayney were pleased with the second place finish in what was their first action of the season. Chisholm added that the team will be in for a pair of hard practices this week. The team is preparing to travel to Weyburn this weekend for a 12-team showdown, says Chisholm.
