The YRHS Raider senior football team got a little bit closer to a .500 record over the weekend.
They almost did it in shut out style too.
Colby Melnechenko kicked a 25-yard field goal which put the YRHS squad up by a 22-0 count, Paul Toth had over 200 yards on the ground and Dalton Fichtner spotted Layne Hall with the longest throw of the game, a 40-yard pass which set Yorkton up for a three-point field goal.
They went on to win 28-6.
"Today, we played Raider football," proclaimed acting head coach Jason Boyda, with no shortage of enthusiasm following what nearly turned out to be a shutout victory for the Orange and White.
Opposing Weyburn had their problems with players getting hurt, but was able to break the shutout with a late touchdown.
Boyda went on to explain that when all aspects of football operate the way they did that day, the other team isn't going to be able to get much going.
"We executed to a 'T'."
He added that Toth's running and tackling were strong in the win and that QB Fichtner, who played both cornerback as well as on the offence "dug down deep today".
More importantly, the victory gave YRHS their second of the season. That moves their record to 2-3. They have two remaining road games in the season.
Boyda expects they will have to win both to get good positioning for playoff matchups.
"This was a playoff game for us today."
He said the team was able to study Weyburn on film a little and that helped.
He added there were two players he said they needed to really key in on to win the game.
YRHS now heads to Luther College High School in Regina on Oct. 7. They will round out the season the following Thursday night (Oct. 13) when they take on the O'Neill Titans, who are ranked in the top three in the league

Playoffs in the Regina Intercollegiate Football League are scheduled to begin on Oct. 19.
