The Sacred Heart Lady Saints of soccer had some success in two previous tournaments which they attended in Prince Albert (Sept. 9-10) and in Moose Jaw (Sept. 16-17).
That made it time for a little success on home pitch.
The tournament draw written up included teams from North Battleford, Prince Albert (St. Mary's I and II), Lloydminster, Regina (Campbell), Prince Albert (Carlton) and the Yorkton Regional High School.
In Sacred Heart's opener, they took on North Battleford and despite a slow start, according to coach Jeanne Fetsch, they came out on top by a 6-2 count after a strong second half.
Rita Fetsch and Kristen Jonassen each scored a pair.
Kaylee Ford and Leta Perepeluk each had one goal in the game.
"The team started slowly in the game against North Battleford. They didn't play focused and made some defensive errors."
Coach Fetsch said they would need to get a few things straight if they had any hopes of advancing to the 'A' side final.
"They ended up winning 6-3 but would need a better effort in the semi final vs Prince Albert St Mary."
The win put the Saints into the 'A' side semi finals later that afternoon.
Their opponent would be Prince Albert (St. Mary's). This game would require double OT.
They put up a good fight, says Fetsch, however, the numbers on the scoreboard would not be in their favour.
"The Sacred Heart girls played well against PA and forced them to overtime."
Fetsch said St. Mary's is a much bigger school and that likely contributed.
"PA is a much larger school and all of their athletes are club players that play city leagues. The Saints did well to stay with them."
The game had gone into double overtime, she said, with Prince Albert prevailing 3-2.
Ford and Rita Fetsch scored the SHHS goals.
The setback set up SHHS in the 'A' consolation/bronze medal game.
They played Regina (Campbell).
In a tight affair, SHHS found themselves down one in the game's second half.
"In the final game against Regina Campbell, the Saints were one goal down with 15 minutes remaining in the game but scored twice in the later part of the gameto win, 3-2," recalls coach Fetsch.
Rita Fetsch picked up a pair of goals while Samantha Okrainec had a single in the win.
Prince Albert eventually won the tournament.
The Saints will be working on defensive clearance and better use of space in the attacking end. They will also focus on ball control and playing better possession soccer, notes coach Fetsch.
The Saints' next action will be an exhibition game vs Yorkton Regional on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Sacred Heart.
