The Sturgis Lacrosse team, which includes players from Kamsack, Norquay and Pelly, has been practicing for its first game which was played yesterday (May 24) against Yorkton.
The team features five different age categories: under eight, under 11, under 14, under 16 and under 19. The under 11 age category has three teams organized as there are numerous players signed up for that age category.
"We have approximately 110 kids with nine coaches," said Brad Cameron, one of the coaches. There are kids signed up from across the region, including Kamsack, Norquay, Canora, Pelly, Invermay, Preeceville, Kelvington and Sturgis.
Registered to play from Kamsack are: Nicholas Bielecki, Ethen Krawetz, Austin Hilderman, Adrian Pearson, Colin Tulloch, Bernice Keshane, Bryden Cochrane and Kishaun Gervais.
Norquay players include: Jack Korpusik, Carson Ebert, Bristol Lindgren, Westin Lindgren, Keegan Dyck, Taber Ebert, Dustin Shankowsky, Tyler Shankowski, Cassandra Dyck, Alexis Lindgren and Rylen Lukey.
Also playing are Taylor Romanishyn of Arran and Jace Vogel of Pelly.
The large numbers are attributed to the fact that the closest other teams are at Yorkton and Saskatoon, he said.
Lacrosse coaches are Cameron, Amber Pristie, Lisa Serdachny, Craig Folk, Cary Franklin, Blair Secundiak, Wes Jaeb, Conrad Peterson and Mark Huska.
Teams practice every Monday and Wednesday with the first game scheduled for May 24 for the older players; May 27 for younger players, and May 29. May 27 is the date of the home tournament. Games will be played in Sturgis.
The next set of games will be June 3 for the younger players and June 5 for the older players in Yorkton.
The under 16 and under 19 players will be participating in provincials in Saskatoon on June 17 and 18.
