Gridders inch closer to .500

Jason Farrell was no doubt thrilled with the way his team played over the weekend.

In fact he insisted that he saw this win coming.

"I kind of felt it coming," offered the head coach following his 29-0 shutout victory over the Lumsden Devils.

The game was the second of three matches that took place in Yorkton Sunday morning underneath a half-grey sky that did not look good at all around halftime.

Instead a little hail dropped by but none of it seemed to concern the players who put up a bunch of touchdowns, in their third home game of the Regina Minor Football League season.

"The kids played great today," he acknowledged.

The defensive line stepped it up even higher then it did last week and Evan Gleason made at least one QB sack after a huge QB sack in last week's game.

Farrell noted that he was more than impressed with most of the players, most of them are new to 12-man football.

"Twenty-five of them started 12-man football a few weeks ago."

On Sunday they played well enough to clinch their second victory of the season. They now see their win-loss record improve to 2-3.

Farrell said he knew exactly what to expect when they lined up against Lumsden.

"We were prepared. Lumsden is better (then the last team we beat)."

He added that the defence was able to shut Lumsden down to the outside and when a defence does that, it forces the opposition to run down the middle.

"They didn't get any plays to the outside."

Yorkton now heads to Liebel Field in Regina where they will attempt to win their third straight game against Estevan.

Farrell also noted that they will need to win at least two of their next games in order to qualify for the post season.

With Sunday's shutout, the Gridders jump into a four way tie with Lumsden, the Patriots, the Unicorns and the Weyburn Eagles, who each had two wins heading into last weekend's action.

Both the Unicorns and Eagles were scheduled to see action last Sunday as well.

The Regina Wolverines and Rams sat in top spot with identical records of 4-0 with eight points each.
