The first “Grassy Knoll Hockey Classic” fundraiser was recently held near Kamsack.
The event was staged at Len Reibin’s acreage on February 16.
“It took many ‘younger stars’ to educate the ‘golden oldies’ on marginal ice,” said Reibin after the game.
The sub-zero temperatures were not enough to dampen the enthusiasm of the spectators. Burgers and hotdogs were there for the enjoyment of all, he said.
Reibin acknowledged the many local businesses for the donations of prizes.
“A small amount of money was raised,” he said. “This will begin the process of constructing a new warm up shack overlooking the Assiniboine River/Lake of the Prairies valley in the years to come,” adding that anyone with location suggestions may contact Reibin or any member of the Grassy Knoll committee.
“For next year, we plan to hold the event later in the season, and plan to have an improved sheet of ice for the hockey game,” said Reibin.
Other plans include kids’ games and a broomball game in the afternoon and the hockey classic in the evening.
“This was the first of what we hope will be many annual such events to come. We acknowledge the support, advice and volunteer help and look forward to next year,” Reibin concluded.
