With the “Moonlight Madness” in full swing, everyone filing into the Broda Sportsplex was greeted with the wonderful singing of Christmas carols prior to the Friday night showdown between the Kamsack Atom Flyers and the Yorkton Deneschuk Terriers.

With the “Moonlight Madness” in full swing, everyone filing into the Broda Sportsplex was greeted with the wonderful singing of Christmas carols prior to the Friday night showdown between the Kamsack Atom Flyers and the Yorkton Deneschuk Terriers.

With the rink almost full to capacity, the Kamsack fanatics were wondering if this Flyers team could keep its winning streak at home intact, as the Atom team has yet to lose at home. Everyone was excited as this was primetime and the main event of the evening with opening faceoff at 7:00 p.m.

It didn’t take long for the fanatics to get off their feet and cheer as No. 8 Rhys Lawless took a pass from No. 4 Kayden Quewezance in the neutral zone and then proceeded to use his great speed and split the defence to go on a breakaway and put home the first goal of the game for the Flyers just three minutes and 15 seconds into the game.

Then two minutes after that No. 12 Joshua Vidomski rifled a shot from the point to put the home team up by two. Less than a minute later and before the announcer could finish announcing the second goal, No. 14 Slade Shankowsky broke free from two defenders and sped in on a breakaway of his own. The “big man” had been a little bit snake bitten to start this season in terms of putting the puck in the net, but with a beautiful shot he dangled the twine of the back of the net and put the home team up by three.

It’s great to see this team really coming together as everyone mobbed Slade to congratulate him as they know how hard he has been working and was finally getting rewarded for his hard work. To finish an outstanding first period, No. 9 Chase Hembling scored twice and the Flyers had a 5-0 lead after one period of play.

As I have said in previous articles, a good team always has a different player or two that steps up and puts on an amazing game and tonight the Flyers team turned to defenceman No. 7, Parker Lorenzo. Parker may not have gotten on the score sheet but without his defensive prowess, who knows how this game would have ended up.

With the game going end to end and things getting a little loosey goosey for the Flyers coach, Parker was in the right spot and making the smart plays. The young defenceman had to make at least a half dozen stops from one-on-ones to stopping full out breakaways. There was no stopping his great effort and determination as Parker’s work ethic was far and away the best of the night.

The second period was probably not the Flyer’ best as Yorkton put up four goals and the Flyers only answered with three. With the score of 8 to 4 for the Flyers heading into the final frame, the Flyers’ players knew they had to batten down the hatches defensively and probably put a few more goals on the board to get a hard fought “W.”

They cleaned up their game somewhat and ended up putting the puck in the net five more times on goals by No. 15 Kealand Thomas, No. 14 Slade Shankowsky, and three goals from No. 9 Chase Hembling. The Flyers stayed undefeated at home with a 13 to 7 victory.
