The Sacred Heart junior girls volleyball team continued to work towards improving for the upcoming district championships of high school volleyball.
SHHS attended a tournament held at the Melville Comprehensive School (MCS), a six-team round-robin event, followed by the playoffs, said Brian Chisholm, coach of the SHHS Junior Lady Saints.
Things went well early for SHHS as they beat Esterhazy, Stockholm, and the MCS, all in two sets, before splitting with the Yorkton Regional High School, then bowing out in two sets to Melville St. Henry.
Says Chisholm: "We finished the round robin with a record of 7-3, good for second place and a bye to the semi-final."
SHHS then advanced to the semi final where they met the YRHS, says Chisholm.
It was back and forth, he said.
"We won the first set, lost the second, then won the third to advance to the final against St. Henry." When the Lady Saints qualified for the final, they were met by Melville, he said.
"Unfortunately, we lost the final to St. Henry in two straight sets."
Chisholm said he was happy with the way the Saints played throughout the whole tournament.
He added that this is a good time for the team to start to 'gel' together, with the district championships coming up shortly in Churchbridge.
"Tremendous improvement has been shown since the beginning of the season, and the team has really come together. We look forward to competing in district championships next weekend in Churchbridge and Langenburg."
He said SHHS will no doubt be gunning for a three-peat when that action gets underway.
"We will try to win district gold for the third straight year. We will need to beat some very good teams to reach that goal, but based on the way the team played this weekend, our goal is within reach," Chisholm closed.
