Canora Composite School's senior girls volleyball team prepared for home tournament

The Canora Composite School鈥檚 senior girls volleyball team has been having a strong season in preparation for its home tournament, which will be held on October 28 and 29.

聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 The Canora Composite School鈥檚 senior girls volleyball team has been having a strong season in preparation for its home tournament, which will be held on October 28 and 29.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The coach, Colin Knight, said that the girls participated in three tournaments over the volleyball season which proved the team鈥檚 strengths.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Early in the season, the girls played a tournament in Creighton. Knight considers that a team-building exercise, and said it allowed the girls, who are in different grades, 鈥渢o come together as a cohesive force.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 On September 16 and 17, the girls played at the Yorkton Regional High School for the 鈥10鈥檚 Tournament.鈥 The girls beat Porcupine Plain in a round robin and played an excellent match in the quarter-finals against Lemburg.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淧laying shed light on the Canora Cougars鈥 ability to adapt to alternative defensive and offensive systems,鈥 Knight said.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The Kamsack Comprehensive Institute鈥檚 tournament was held on October 14 and 15 and the team was awarded first place in its pool. The girls showed that even without their starting setters, who were not able to attend, the team has what it takes to compete, Knight said, commending both the new setters for this year, Jill Gulka and Felicity Mydonick, as well as the replacement setters for the game, who were Carmen Stusek and Janayah Merriam.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淭hey filled the setting positions with ease which created more possibilities for our tactical offense.鈥

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Stusek is also the team鈥檚 captain, and Knight considers her a major component of the team for her ability to play any position and remain calm under pressure.

鈥嬄犅犅犅犅犅犅犅犅犅犅 鈥淭he Canora Cougars senior girls volleyball team has the physical aptitude to play smart, powerful volleyball, and members have grown in their ability to practice a mentally disciplined game,鈥 Knight said.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The girls were set to play a tournament in Regina over the weekend, and are preparing for the home tournament. Knight encourages people to come out and enjoy the games. Two baskets of goodies, one with a Halloween theme and one with a sports theme, will be raffled, with proceeds from that and the canteen going towards the purchase of equipment for the Canora Composite School鈥檚 volleyball program.
