This past Saturday marked the second time this season for a triple bill of football games at the YRHS Kinsmen Century Field.
Starting off the day was the newest team in the Regina Minor Football League, the Yorkton Gridder atoms, as they took on the Regina Kats.
The scoreboard at the end of the day read 27-13 in favour of Regina, but Steve Variyan, head coach, said it was a good game for his team.
It had an added bonus of the first touchdown ever scored by an atom player.
Garion Miller got credit when after his 65-yard rush wound up in the end zone, giving Yorkton a 7-0.
Jarius Pellat also scored a touchdown in the third quarter.
"It's the most exciting thing," said Variyan of the two touchdowns. "We're starting to figure out who some of our better players are."
Variyan said he was happy with the performance, but noted that there is still a ways to go for them.
He said part of the reason for that is that compared to the other teams in the RMFL, Yorkton has a very young team, and short on experience.
"All of the other teams in the leaguesome are in their third year. We still have a ways to go."
Variyan said that due to RMFL regulations, the team can only hold practices three times per week.
He said it's good for confidence and gives the players a chance to see how it feels to be fully padded.
"It took a couple of games to get used to it," he observed after the first couple home games.
He said it helps for the kids to know what it means to be offside, understand the concept of what holding means and getting their stance right on the line of scrimmage.
Their next game is on Sunday (Sept. 18) when they tackle the Lakers.
