Atom football team looking forward to Estevan

Everything seemed to be going fine for the atom Yorkton Gridder football team.

Everything seemed to be going fine for the atom Yorkton Gridder football team. Right up until the visiting Regina Eskimos scored their first points, then the offensive plan for Yorkton seemed to go downhill, suggested Steve Variyan, head coach of the Gridders.

Adding to the pressure, he said, was that the Eskimos team had won their last three games and were likely coming into Yorkton on a high note.

The game was Yorkton's third home tilt in Regina Minor Football League action, says Variyan. He added that his club was close to continuing a trend which they started in their previous home match.
"Yeah," he said with a sigh. "We would have liked to score some pointswe almost did."

Yorkton fell to the Eskimos by a final score of 26-0. It was the first of three RMFL games held at the Yorkton Regional High School's Kinsmen Century Field. The Pee Wee Gridders and the YRHS junior teams were also up for action.

Variyan said he liked the way his team was playing late in the game, pointing to a QB who can run the football almost at will (Grady Hawkins), Garion Miller (who scored the first TD in the history of the team in last week's game, Nolan Budz and Matthew Balysky..
"They really run the ball well," observes Variyan.

He said their next game will be key in development as they head south to take on Estevan. Variyan told media after Sunday's loss that his team needs to work on aggression and hopes to get a few things in place in time for Estevan. It will involve two teams with the same record. Both will be looking for their first victory.
