A Veregin couple who enjoy the sport of archery has begun the process of establishing an archery club in Kamsack.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淚 only got started a week and a half ago and already many people have expressed an interest,鈥 Scott Green said last week when he and his partner Rhonda Streelasky talked about his plans with the Times.
An archer since the age of 12, Green, who lives north of Veregin, said he has been associated with the archery club in Estevan and has attended archery shoots and competitions and has hunted with arrows shot from a compound bow.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e鈥檙e interested in developing a family-oriented archery club,鈥 he said, explaining that he was currently seeking the availability of a large indoor space of at least 50 yards in length for a shooting gallery to be used during the winter and is looking for access to a few acres of nearby bush land where archers could practice their sport during the summers.
Archery events, like 3-D shoots, bring lots of people into a community, he said, mentioning the experience of Canora where such competitions are held.
Green said that members of the Kamsack branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation have expressed interest in helping him organize a club which would be a non-profit organization.
As envisioned, the proposed club would have instructors, would be affiliated with a group such as the Saskatchewan Archery Association and would organize various programs for different age groups.
Archery, which is a growing sport with interest having picked up in the past few years, takes a lot of discipline and patience, but the rewards are significant, he said. In addition to developing archery skills, participation in the sport results in meeting and associating with other people, especially during various 3-D shoots.
It is a sport for anyone of any age or ability and of both sexes, he said. Some archers have picked up their first bows when they were as young as five years of age.
As plans develop for the proposed Kamsack club, Green said he expects to be calling a meeting regarding its formation and said the group would probably need to organize some fundraising projects.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e鈥檒l need people to help out; we鈥檒l need volunteers,鈥 he said, asking people interested in joining the club or volunteering as an organizer to contact him through the Kamsack Recreation Board鈥檚 Facebook page.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥淲e鈥檒l need help, including donations, getting started,鈥 he said. Any help will be appreciated.
