STURGIS — The Sturgis Station House Museum took advantage of the warmer temperatures to do some outdoor clean-up to prepare for the new season. A group of volunteers were joined by a number of Grade 10 students from the Sturgis Composite School on May 10 for the annual cleanup. The museum opening date for the 2024 season was May 16.
The museum has some fundraising efforts in place for the season to help with operational costs. They will be hosting a museum barbecue lunch on June 14 and its open day tea party is set for June 21.
The museum’s Agriculture building is completed and committee members are busy organizing the displays. Displays to be focused on this year include the blacksmith shop and organizing the photograph collection.
The museum has hired two summer students this year: Jake Soltys as grounds maintenance and Sydney Hrushlea as curator for the season.
Sydney is a U of S student who has a bachelor of arts with majors in archelogy and anthropology. She was originally born in B.C. but her family moved to Saskatchewan when she was six years old. They settled in the Wynard area where she attended elementary and high school. As a child she was always interested in rocks and digging in the dirt for artifacts.
“This is my first job in an actual museum and I am looking forward to the experience. I would like to concentrate my focus on organizing the blacksmith display in the Ag Building and just getting acquainted with the artifacts and people in the area,” she said.
The museum will be open from Tuesday to Sunday.
