Return of the fire truck
Kamsack Fire Chief, Ken Thompson, received the call to come and pick up one of the two Kamsack Fire Department fire trucks that had been undergoing service near Prince Albert for the duration of the fall season. Fortunately, the department didn’t have to respond to any major incidents while the vehicle was in the repair shop.
Keep the Wreath Red
Those driving past the Kamsack Fire Department station may notice a large wreath lit up with bright red bulbs. In its second year of “Keep the Wreath Red” promotion, the department is encouraging all area residents to once again practice fire safety during the holiday season. For each fire emergency response during the month of December, a red bulb will be replaced with a white one. The overall goal is to work as community to keep every bulb shining red. In particular, those planning to deep fry foods such as turkeys, are reminded to ensure the foods are completely thawed (even deep within the centre) to avoid extremely dangerous out-of-control flaming of the product while it is submerged in the hot oil.
Office of the Treaty Commission
As part of an ongoing commitment to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation efforts, the Town of Kamsack is working with Rhett Sangster, Director of Reconciliation and Community Partnerships, to assemble a committee for the Office of the Treaty Commission. The team will ultimately consist of three members from town council and three members from the public. Anyone interested in volunteering to be a part of this committee is encouraged to contact the town office for more information.
Snow and Ice Removal
Kamsack Town Council has voted to continue with the existing snow and ice removal bylaw. Private contractors will be contacted to provide normal removal services, and an expanded dumping area has been chosen to accommodate large amounts of snow.
Plans for Transfer Station to replace Landfill
Ritchie Cleland of Ottenbriet Sanitation Services recently met with Kamsack’s Town Council to present options regarding the closing of the Kamsack Landfill and turning it into a transfer station. Although no location has been determined, the project is estimated to conclude in the next two years.
Green Bins
The Town of Kamsack is discussing a potential “green bin” program that will promote the collection of organic food waste that could be turned into compost. Mayor Brunt said the benefits would include reducing household waste normally sent to the landfill, as well as the production of useful compost for local gardening efforts.
New RCMP Members
S/Sgt. Noel Allard recently introduced the three new members joining the Kamsack RCMP Detachment. New to the local team are Cpl. Holhoyi, Cst. Lord, and Cst. Bailey.
Utility Subdivision near Riverside Golf
Trans Gas has been granted permission to set up a utility subdivision for work on gas lines near Kamsack’s Riverside Golf Course. Mayor Brunt said the work will not affect the golf course or its usage.
Town of Kamsack Staff Christmas
In lieu of holiday gift baskets, staff members will instead be gifted with a paid day off on Friday, December 24. Members of the Kamsack Fire Department will receive gift cards. Town Office will be closed for the holiday break between the dates of December 24 and 28.
Request for Harm Reduction Lockers
Town Council has received a request from the Sunrise Health Authority for harm-reduction lockers to be installed in a heated, 24-hour location in Kamsack. The lockers would provide supplies like clean needles, condoms, and bottled water to those who suffer from addiction. Mayor Brunt explained that currently there is no facility available for this type of service. In the new year, SHA Primary Health Manager, Megan Crane, will be invited to discuss the request further with council.
Christmas Spirit in Kamsack
Friday, December 10 will officially launch Kamsack into the holiday season with a free Pop-up Book Shop and Giveaway for local families from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kamsack Family Resource Centre at 241 Second Street. The Santa Claus Parade will begin at 6 p.m. on the town’s main street. Following the parade, residents are invited to visit the Broda Sportsplex to attend a fun hockey game organized by Town Councillor, Bryce Erhardt; and a Christmas Market in the upstairs mezzanine, hosted by Town Councillor, Shelley Filipchuk.
