KAMSACK - On the afternoon of Thursday, May 5, the Kamsack Nursing Home transformed into the most happening party in town. Recreation staff worked for weeks leading up to the fiesta that celebrated Cinco de Mayo with bright colours, balloons, decorations, party favours, a photo booth, lively music, and a buffet of tasty Mexican foods and drinks.
Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which fell on Thursday, May 5 in 2022, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day.
The afternoon began with Kamsack Nursing Home staff offering some trivia about Mexico and the origins of the holiday. Residents were then invited to dress up in costumes that included ponchos, sombreros, Mexican blankets, and a variety of hats and fake mustaches. As Mexican-style music filled the room, residents were positioned in front of the colourful photo backdrop and among the hand-crafted cactus decorations, (made by a staff member). One by one, each resident took a turn posing for the camera with props that included strings of garlic, chili peppers, maracas, paper cut-outs of margarita drinks, or playful speech bubbles.
Once the activity portion was over, residents and staff were treated to a tasty Mexican-inspired feast, including cheesy beef-covered nachos, cinnamon chips, fresh fruit salad, seven-layer dip, and ‘mocktail’ versions of tequila sunrise and margarita drinks.
