MADGE LAKE — The Duck Mountain Nordic Club is preparing for its premier event.
The Duck Mountain Loppet, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24, starts at the Madge Lake Golf Course in Duck Mountain Provincial Park.
“The club’s goal is to build upon the history of the club and loppet as created by local legend Bruno Lemire,” said Kevin Sutton, the club’s president.
The event features five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 kilometre classic trails, as well as five, 10, 15 and 20 kilometre skate trails.
There’s also a special jackrabbit course for the little ones that includes hotdog and marshmallow roasting.
“In addition to a fun day of cross-country skiing, all registrants will receive a special ‘loppet day gift,’ snacks at each of the five trail shelters, eligibility for an abundance of draw prizes, and a hot meal provided by the Iron Grill,” said a release from the ski club.
Financial support for the event by local businesses and participant safety will again be supported by the presence of Duck Mountain Ambulance and the Sask Ski Patrollers.
In the past, skiers have travelled from many parts of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and even Alberta to participate in the event.

All participants must check in at the Log Inn shelter in the golf course parking lot between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Slow start to season
While it was a slow start to the cross-country ski season due to lack of so, the Duck Mountain Nordic Club has been working hard with the Duck Mountain Provincial Park to provide a fun and safe ski experience.
“Many willing volunteers came out in the fall to help with pre-season trail cleanup and new siding was purchased and installed by the club on Ski Hill Shelter,” the club said.
The club is encouraging people to get a membership so it can continue to work on new improvements. Memberships can be obtained online at duckmountainnordicclub.ca or Zone4.ca.
