CANORA — Motorists who have been travelling on Hwy No. 9 north of Canora since late January have probably noticed large equipment and intense activity where the highway meets the Assiniboine River.
Construction is underway on a new bridge on Highway No. 9 over the Assiniboine River, according to Steve Shaheen, Senior Communications Consultant with the Ministry of Highways.
“This is a bridge replacement about 5 km north of Amsterdam,” said Shaheen. “Work began the week of January 24 and is scheduled for completion at the end of June. The cost of the project is $4 million and Minty’s Moving is the general contractor.”
During construction, traffic will be accommodated on a temporary bridge adjacent to the existing bridge.
“Expect minor delays as traffic will be reduced to one lane and controlled with the use of traffic signals,” explained Shaheen. “Loads are restricted to 4.3 metres in width. Speeds are also reduced to 60 km/h or less in the construction zone.”
Regular inspections determined that the old bridge at this location was at the end of its life cycle and needed to be replaced. Of course, winter is not ideal for all aspects of the construction of a new bridge.
“The cold weather is not favourable for things like paving, but it does provide opportunities for crews and it allows them to perform this type of bridge work,” continued Shaheen. “Crews are always preparing for various challenges including those by nature and will pivot accordingly.”
Construction work continues year-round on Saskatchewan highways. Motorists need to remember to slow down, obey signage and be aware of people working in the work zone areas.
