TISDALE — Construction on an off-leash dog park in the north west area of Tisdale is expected to begin early this summer, after the town received $49,500 from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF).
The CCRF, which comes from the federal government, aims to help communities across Canada build and improve community infrastructure projects so they can rebound from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The dog park, located on the north west area of town and north of the existing cemetery, will include 1,500 feet of fence, benches, garbage cans, lights, and baggies for owners to pick up after their companion.
Brad Hvidston, Tisdale’s administrator, said prep work and seeding has already begun on the area where they intend to build the park.
“We’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s needed in town, and I think especially after COVID there was a lot of families who went out and got dogs during that time period,” Hvidston said. “There seems to be a lot more dogs around town now, which is exciting.”
The grant is planned to cover 75 per cent of the cost, with the total project currently expected to cost $66,000. The Kinsmen have committed to covering $5,000, while the Kinettes have committed to $3,000, which will go towards the benches and garbage cans. The town will be investing $8,500 to cover the remaining costs.
Lesley Thibault, Tisdale’s director of recreation and parks, said they’re currently looking at fencing that will be five feet tall, but the height of the fence as well as parking options are still under committee review.
“You can enter the dog park from Boundary Road, down the trail, or you can do it from the New Market area. There are options to park in that New Market area coming onto the trail,” Tribault said.
“We’re super excited. I hope it’s well utilized by the community and hope they get some enjoyment out of it with their little canine friends.”
