Team Zuravloff, with three players from the Canora area, took part in the U21 Saskatchewan Junior Provincials to choose the provincial representative for the New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championship in Stratford Ont. to be held March 25 to April 1, 2022.
The members of Team Zuravloff are: Brody Harrison, lead (Canora); Justin Harcourt, second (Saskatoon); Lane Zuravloff, third (Buchanan); Brandon Zuravloff, skip (Canora), and Rob Zuravloff, coach (Canora).
Team Zuravloff qualified for provincials in the Moose Jaw qualifying spiel at the end of January. There were two qualifying events held, each event had four teams advance to provincials. Brandon and Lane (who are cousins) had played in provincials several years ago together, but otherwise this was a new team this year. They were unable to play last year as the events were cancelled due to COVID.
Provincials took place from February 23 to 27 at Martensville.
According to information provided by the Curlsask website, the format for provincials was triple knockout with a four-team page-playoff. Team Zuravloff got off to a slow start with a 7 to 2 loss to Team Ede. The second game ended in a 9 to 1 loss to Team Bryden.
“It was imperative that the third game be won or the team was knocked out,” said Coach Zuravloff. “They pulled together to get a win against Team Drewitz by the score of 7 to 4. This took them to the qualifying game to advance to the playoffs if they won. Unfortunately, they lost against Team Ede. Team Zuravloff ranked sixth in the Province.”
