CANORA - This year, our school garden faced some challenges. Due to a late planting on June 17, we didn’t get the ideal start we had hoped for. The planting conditions were less than perfect, and this was followed by a hot, dry summer that further impacted our garden’s productivity. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the same level of success as in previous years.
We were fortunate to have two students help with weeding over the summer. However, with the late planting, the weeds got a head start, making it difficult to keep them under control. Ideally, CCS students would help weed the garden in June, allowing us to manage the growth early, but this year that didn’t happen.
We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cora Tibbett from Canora Greenhouse, Kevin Young from Young’s Greenhouse in Yorkton, and Danny Rakochy of Canora for rototilling our garden. Cora has been a huge supporter of our school garden each year, and Kevin generously donated a number of plants, for which we are incredibly grateful. Danny’s help in preparing the garden was also greatly appreciated.
On a positive note, our school kitchen renovation has been completed, and we’re excited to announce that we are now offering Commercial Cooking at CCS. Our Commercial Cooking teacher, Olivia Gordon, has already put some of our garden’s produce to good use, incorporating the beets and potatoes into her classes.
Moving forward, students will be looking to bring in community experts to teach them how to make traditional dishes like borscht and perogies. We also hope to highlight the rich cultural heritage of Canora, inviting local experts to share their knowledge through food with our students.
Any leftover produce from the garden will be sold or donated to the Filling the Gap Canora Food Bank, continuing our commitment to giving back to the community.
Thank you to everyone who supported our garden this year. We look forward to a more fruitful season next year!
As always, if you would like to support our garden project in any way, please do not hesitate to phone the school at 306-563-5492.
