Community-oriented groups supported by Crossroads Credit Union

Members were asked to nominate a community group or non-profit organization raising funds for a project or program that impacts Crossroads Country for a chance to receive funding.

CANORA - The Crossroads Credit Union announced the recipients of funding from the Community Investment Fund during the Credit Union Day on Oct. 17.

During the week, Co-op Week was also celebrated in co-operatives, including Crossroads, that impact on our communities.

Coffee and cake were served on Oct. 17 during the special day at the Preeceville, Canora and Wadena locations.

At the Sturgis location the new Advice Centre was unveiled with a ribbon cutting СÀ¶ÊÓƵ.

According to the Crossroads Credit Union website, “We want to make our communities a better place for the people in Crossroads Country by supporting community development and helping our communities continue to flourish. We are small enough to care and big enough to make a difference.”

For the 2024 Crossroads Community Investment Fund allocation, members were asked to nominate a community group or non-profit organization raising funds for a project or program that impacts Crossroads Country for a chance to receive funding.

Canora Composite School received $2,000 towards their Nutrition & Wellness Program. "We are fortunate to have an exceptional food preparation space, equipped with equipment you would find in any restaurant, such as industrial fridge and industrial dishwasher. Not only will students learn how to plant and cultivate produce year-round, they will also have the opportunity to process and eat what they have grown.”

The Canora Legion Hall received $4,000 towards new chairs for the facility. “To enhance, upgrade and modernize the Canora Legion Hall we want to replace the aging chairs currently used for Legion meetings and fundraising events. As well, we want to provide a modern and comfortable environment for all types of community activities.”

Trakkers Snow Club of Canora received $2,500 towards their goal of fixing the warmup shelter roof (north of Canora). “Our Club provides an outlet for a safe snowmobiling experience during the winter months, ensuring safe trails for our community and out-of- town tourists. Bringing in tourists from other towns, cities and provinces also helps our Crossroads Country's Economics.”

Canora Junior Elementary School received $1,500 towards their nutrition program. “Nutrition programs in schools are vital because they ensure students receive the essential nutrients needed for optimal growth, learning, and overall well-СÀ¶ÊÓƵ.”

Town of Canora (Leisure Services) received $6,000 through the CIF Fund to purchase portable pickleball net systems. “Our newly renovated multi-sport court (pickleball, basketball, tennis) needs portable pickleball net systems. With these nets’ community members will be able to have four games going on at once. The pickleball community in Canora is growing and gives all ages an opportunity to participate in physical activity.”

Canora Community Childcare Centre received $5,000 through the CIF Fund towards their programming initiatives that includes a summer program. “We provide quality and inclusive childcare to the families of Canora and the surrounding area. We focus on holistic early learning and strive to create an environment that leans heavily towards children learning through play.”

The Rama Recreation Board received $3,000 through the CIF Fund towards their program funding. “The Rama Recreation board helps make an impact in the community with their fundraising efforts and free events they put on for the kids and residents. The major project they completed with the help of grants and fundraising was the new play structures at the park.”

Invermay School received $1,500 through the CIF Fund towards their nutrition program, “Implementing a nutrition program in schools is vital as it promotes healthy eating habits, enhances students’ learning capabilities, and supports their overall physical and mental development.”

Kuroki Community Club received $2,500 towards their mop room project. “The Kuroki Community Club is an integral part of the community has always been self-supporting. Funds received will be used to build a mop room with a floor drain, so the heavy buckets do not have to be lifted.”

The Stenen Recreation Board received $2,500 towards their new play structure project. “Our present equipment is an old wooden structure that is becoming unsafe. This new structure would be a huge impact as we feel it is important to have a safe playground for the children of our community and any visitors to our community.”

The Hamlet of Crystal Lake received $2,500 towards their project of installing permanent public washrooms at the beach area. “We are constructing a two-bay washroom/change room with an attached covered picnic shelter at the Crystal Lake beach. The beach is open at no charge and enjoyed by the surrounding communities. The lake holds swimming lessons for four weeks in the summer, the washroom/change room will be a great facility for these families.”

The Preeceville School received $5,000 towards their project of creating an outdoor learning space. “Our outdoor space/playground project aims to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging play space for the children in our community. The outdoor space will be a hub for social interaction, physical activity, and educational development. We envision a vibrant, well-designed area where children can learn, grow, and have fun.”

The Preeceville Arena received $5,000 towards renovating the dressing room washrooms. “The arena has five dressing room washrooms that need to be renovated. This will be a large, costly project that will take place over several seasons as funding is essential.”

The Preeceville Recreation Board received $4,000 towards repurposing the old tennis courts. “The goal is to repurpose the old tennis courts in Preeceville into a pickleball court as this is a growing activity in the surrounding areas. Once the court is complete, the goal is to have the possibility of hosting tournaments.”

The Preeceville School received $1,500 towards their nutrition program. “The Preeceville School Breakfast Café Program feeds many children every morning, whether they miss breakfast at home, have long bus rides and need an extra breakfast or students that just need a little snack!”

The SPE Family Resource Centre in Sturgis received $3,000 through the CIF Fund towards their Cooking with Kids Program. “The SPE Family Resource Centre provides programs and services to support families and children in the Sturgis, Preeceville, and Endeavour area and has done so since 1996. All programs are free and focus on literacy and nutrition and are dependent on grants and donations.”

The Sturgis Read Club received $3,000 towards their new concrete pad allowing easier accessibility. “We are hopeful by providing a safe entrance for people that require walking assistance, more people in our community and surrounding area will be able to safely attend more functions and the biggest benefit to our seniors is the ability to communicate, visit and enjoy others' company.”

Sturgis Composite School received $1,500 towards their nutrition program. “We provide healthy breakfast options for all students so that it gives them all an equal opportunity to begin their day in a healthy way. A healthy start to a child’s day allows them to achieve better learning, awareness and an appreciation for their community because of the support that they receive. The SCS Breakfast Program also supports local business as the groceries are purchased locally.”

The Sturgis Rural Fire Co-op received $4,000 towards purchasing a new piece of Jaws of Life equipment. A Fire Department is crucial in a community because it provides essential emergency services. These dedicated volunteers help ensure rapid response times during fires, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. Their commitment fosters a strong sense of community spirit and co-operation.

Other funding recipients were: the Wadena Elementary School received $1,500 towards their nutrition program, the Wadena Player’s Theatre received $5,000 towards their outdoor stage project, and the Wadena Composite School received $1,500 towards their nutrition program.
