The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) is seeking young beef producers with a desire to become industry leaders.

SSGA is looking to build on the success of their Youth Mentorship Program. The program is funded through the Youth Leadership and Mentorship Initiative under Growing Forward 2.

Under the mentorship initiative, producers between 18 and 39 years of age are partnered with highly-regarded industry leaders. In addition to working alongside their mentors, the young producers are funded up to $4,000 to attend industry conferences and workshops.

Brad Howe of Two Rivers Ranch west of Leader is currently completing his mentorship under SSGA Past President Doug Gillespie.聽 He said the program has inspired him.

鈥淗opefully we mentees can give back and be a part of these industry groups, and help further the industry,鈥 he said. 鈥淒oug was an excellent mentor, he taught me a lot about the Stock Growers as a producer-driven group, how they work for the producer and the value they add to the Saskatchewan beef industry.鈥

SSGA President Shane Jahnke said it鈥檚 hard for young producers to get off the ranch and learn about the many facets of the beef industry. 鈥淭he mentorship program is an excellent opportunity for those who want to get involved in industry advocacy and policy development,鈥 he said.

鈥淭he SSGA is into our second century working for producers, and our focus is on the future. Upcoming generations will need to communicate with governments and other industry stakeholders,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e see great leadership potential in our young producers, and this is a great way for them to make important connections and learn the ropes of advocacy.鈥

The SSGA is accepting applications for five mentorships. To be eligible for the program, producers must be 18 - 39 years of age, have clear leadership goals and objectives, and show leadership potential.

To apply, producers can complete the online application form or contact the SSGA at (306) 757-8523. Application deadline is September 30.
