BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) 鈥� Colombian authorities say they have captured Dairo Antonio 脷suga, alias 鈥淥toniel,鈥� leader of the violent Clan del Golfo drug cartel and one of the country鈥檚 most wanted traffickers.
The U.S. State Department had offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of 脷suga, whose power base is in Colombia鈥檚 Uraba region.
鈥淭his is a coup ... only compared to the capture of Pablo Escobar,鈥� said President Iv谩n Duque, confirming the detention in a statement. Escobar, the founder and head of the Medellin Cartel, died in a shootout in 1993.
Human Rights Watch Americas director Jos茅 Miguel Vivanco congratulated Colombian authorities for 脷suga鈥檚 detention and urged justice of the victims of 鈥渢he hundreds of crimes committed under his command.鈥�.
